Evocativevideo…holding our way of living in our arms and watching it as it breathes its last breath. I sigh and remember…
My East Texasancestors were in the lumber business; oil and natural gas was discovered on their landin the 1920’s, at first more than enough to meetAmerica’s needs. We even imported oil to other countries. Through the years, I watched my mother shrink as our homegrown industry fell into irrelevance with the importcheap mideastern oil.
Now I collect income on those royalties. Because of this free income I’ve been able to take a sabbatical and write about my family…to heal myself…to find answers to my lifelong longing to create something beautiful from the gifts of the earth, so misued. I am at odds with myself…one part of me gratefully acceptingmy ancestors enterprisingvision for creating availability of fuel America would need…another part of me wanting to return the income to the land…to create green alternatives…to live once again in harmony with the gifts of the earth. Like all of us, co-creators for a new earth, I’m a work in progress…
I am not yet clear how Iwill do my part inreturning the bounty…not that my portion of the family enterprise is a lot of money.I will definitelygo back to work.I only know my soul leans for transformation of this giftwhich became the family curse, draining theirsense of purpose with every barrel pumped from the ground.
Truly, a new world awaits…I already have my arms around it.
